about
Back to the acoustic this week, trying some things new, keeping some things old. I’m working on a number of projects this month, with a diverse spread of musical styles. At the place where these intersect came the inspiration for Son You Are the Sky: a folksy, rolling, rising anthem.
I’m starting to put the Song Cycle tunes into separate piles - whether to play live with groups, to form into albums, I dunno (I have 37 left to write!). I’m enjoying mixing up the piles a bit from how I would traditionally divide, thinking about what Uh-Oh and RiverStomp might sound like sequenced back to back, or played together at a gig. I think Son falls in with the folksier stuff of We’ve Got It and I’m Going, but maybe it’ll end up alongside something loud. We’ll see.
lyrics
Son, there is a humbling
To watch the light begun
In your eyes
Son, be a discoverer,
Be no other boy
Alive.
Go, where you most wish you to be.
Know that where you go you go with me.
Son, what are you hiding from?
What’s this bitter form
In your eyes?
Son, why are you poisoning
All the waters and
The sky?
Sold on the anger of defeat
Holding onto charcoal for the heat
And if you will not even try
I will not be your sympathizer, no
And if your will is less than true
You’ll do the same I did to you
Son, what you running from?
What has the dark begun
In you?
Son, but a single one
Thing God has done
You can undo.
Go, where you most fear you should be
Know you’ll be a stronger man than me
Seek the stars that lead to you
Your death is yours alone to choose in life
The darkness knows nothing of truth
It’s but a dream that seems to prove it’s right
And, Son, don’t make a foe of you
You far too strong to simply lose your life
Son, you are the sky.
