Can’t Sleep was inspired by DC Pierson’s book The Boy Who Couldn’t Sleep and Never Had To. DC asked me to make a song for a mix tape he’ll use to promote the book.
It’s a sad and exciting book - about the people and moments that inspire us to the first great changes in our lives, that teach us there is a world outside ourselves where just about everything is possible when you have someone awesome by your side. It’s also about how vulnerable we are when we commit to loving and trusting someone, and just how terrible it is to be hurt by your best friend. It’s also about aliens and time travel and teenage sex. There are jokes, too.
lyrics
If I blew myself a kiss
Wouldn’t you think something was amiss?
If I could grow myself again
What to keep and what to weed away
I need you
If I put all my faith in you
Just how soon would you make me regret the move?
Like a cousin to the wind
shapes ain’t cement, snakeskin’s all we’re in
Still, i need you
Can’t rely on anyone anymore
Sell me something more than what you’d like
Blood’s not enough, promise me you’re mine
I can’t rely on anyone anymore
I can’t sleep it’s all these dreams of all I’ve been before
