about

This is my first take on a new band project centered around the concepts of restraint and balance - It’ll be a 3-piece with drums, guitar and vocals. The drummer and guitarist will add backing vocals for hooks and such, and the vocalist has access to a tambourine, but nothing else (no keys, extra hands, etc). My goal is to explore crafting music that doesn’t need layers and layers of orchestration to build, and to reconnect with simple garage band pleasures after spending so much time in Twee and Musical Theater territories.

For this project, I’m joined by the very talented Brandon Uranowitz on lead vocals (I only wish he were on this demo…). Brandon and I have worked together on a number of New York Neo-Classical projects, and have often talked of a side project together. This’ll be our first foray in that direction. While he’s away working in California for the next few months, I’ll be stockpiling songs and sending them his way for notes and approval - hopefully we’ll have a show late in the year.

It’s always strange to me to write lyrics for someone else to sing. The intention of the words, however hidden, is always immediately available to me. Not so for another singer - and yet I’d feel cheap to “clear up” the song lyrically and imposing to detail the intended effect to the singer. I’ll be interested to see where Brandon takes the tracks I’m working on, and what he takes from them. I have a feeling these songs will be very different once he gets his hands on them.

lyrics

I put my number onto you
I bit my lip and smiled
I took my service under you
Marveled outward at your device
I made devices known to you
I made for striking flint
I made my rights alone to you
Everyone must have been convinced

I put my number onto you
I bit my lip and smiled
I saw the look come over you
Flash of teeth, white hard cold and wide
You put yourself at ease with me
You put your fences down
I never needed anything
Thank God no one else was around

And, oh, what you gave to me
Was black black hands
And sharp sharp teeth
And, oh, what you never find
Is hot hot blood
That can wait its time

I put my number onto you
I waited far to long
The silence followed all too soon
Though the patience sweetened the draw
I made devices known to you
I made an awful mess
Those teeth you shown were absolute
Now my pocket’s equally dressed

And, oh, what you gave to me
Was black black hands
And sharp sharp teeth
And, oh, what you never find
Is hot hot blood
That can wait its time

All I said is my dear boy you have to face it…

And, oh, what you gave to me
Was black black hands
And sharp sharp teeth
And, oh, what you never find
Is hot hot blood
That can wait its time

And all I did was go and take what was my favorite
And all I did was leave the rest out on the pavement
And all I said was my dear boy you have to face it
I’m gonna wear your teeth like a mother fucking charm bracelet
