Had the idea for this song over two and a half years ago, while riding through the forest at night in California. My sister was getting married and I wrote out the first verse on the back of a wedding program.
At the time it was about needing to leave a relationship and feeling terrible for feeling that way. Years later, when I tried to pick it up again, it was about someone leaving me and feeling unsure of herself. Just last week I found both versions of the lyrics and worked the ideas together. It’s funny to me that I’m maybe finally mature enough to write this song, that it had to grow with me for years, until I was ready to accept both sides of the story it tells.
lyrics
So I don’t wanna go, but I know how to breathe
And all these secrets in me are making pieces of me
There’s a dam around this city shaking hands with the sea
And making plans to proceed, licking salt through its teeth
And I don’t mean to complain
But I don’t need to explain
That I don’t want to be the last one to stay
I don’t want to think about the violence in me
But there are islands in me and each is dying to breathe
And when the waters rise we’ll all belong to the sea
And the invasion I fear is only I into me
And I don’t mean to complain
But I don’t need to explain
That I don’t want to be the last one to stay
Idle are the thoughts I don’t wanna believe
Cuz that’s the label I give when I’m lyin to me
And silence is the gift I’m spitting in the between
And what is she to believe, but of a wreck and the weak
She’s thinkin, I don’t mean to complain
But I don’t need to explain
That I don’t want to be the last one to stay
