about

Wanted to do something big and anthemic this week, with large melody hooks falling on top of one another. Was also thinking about what to do for the next Teen Girl Scientist Monthly tune. Lyrically, I wanted to paint a picture of camaraderie - I’ve been so blessed with good people in my life of late. Melted those ideas together here.

In my head, the music video is a group of kids sneaking out of an orphanage or children’s hospital and playing out in a big field at night. That feeling of breaking out past the fences and spending stolen time with a good group of people has been on my mind lately.

I’ve been throwing around the term “anthemic” all year, and I know it’s not a word to use lightly. I feel a bit like I’m talking above my abilities when I use it - To a certain extent, I wonder if it’s a “style” one can write, or if it’s achieved in some other, greater way (arrangement, passion…). I wonder if it’s even for me to say whether my music is one thing or another when it comes to passion, or effect on the listener. I still feel like I’m stumbling a bit when it comes to those questions.

This should have had Melissa Lusk’s voice on it, but sadly, there wasn’t time to record.

lyrics

You can stay awake, if you wanna
You can stay awake, if you wanna go
If you wanna go

We can steal a night, if we’re honest
We can steal a night, if we wanna go
If we wanna go

And we’ll each go weaving in the shadows
Sidewalk creeping, silent windows
Past the fences, they can’t hold us
For long. C’mon, c’mon, c’mon.

We can chase the dark, if we wanna
We can kick up sparks at every obstacle
We go where we wanna go

You can count on me, if you wanna
You can count on me, I’m gonna count on you
Like I want you to

And we’ll each go walking in the moon’s eye
Sideways stalking in the lamp light
And there’s no caution, you at my side
It’s on. C’mon, c’mon, c’mon.

We’ll go speeding in the shadows
Sidewalk creeping, silent windows
Past the fences, they can’t hold us
For long. C’mon, c’mon, c’mon.
