about

I wasn’t initially sure what to do about #41, as I was out of town for the majority of the weekend - the time when most recording gets done around here. I’ve posted late before (up to about a week and a half behind in places), but I’ve never liked doing that. Besides, this week will be packed with recording sessions for the Teen Girl Scientist Monthly EP as well as Boy Girl Party’s CMJ show this Friday: If I missed the weekend’s window, things could get pretty backed up.

Luckily, Mel and I were visiting my dad, which provided me the perfect opportunity to keep things up to date. For years, my father and I have recorded together out in his garage onto a massive old 8 track tape unit. The first songs I ever wrote were recorded out there, and the experiences from that studio time are some of what spurred me on to write and record my own music.

So, with Mel on the drums and me on bass, we churned out a Kinks-esque quickie, with my dad adding lead guitar and manning the mixer. We added some vocals and that was it, for the most part. When I got home on Sunday, I filled out the sound a bit and EQ’d what I could. Written, practiced (even if it doesn’t sound like it) and recorded in 3 hours or so, with maybe another 60 minutes of mixing.

I usually come up with some sort of plan before I start writing and recording each week, but this was a much more “natural” experience. I sometimes forget (with my drum machine and my one-by-one solo tracking methods) what it means to live record demos out in a garage, and to hear music as it honestly sounds. This is Melissa’s first time ever on drums, and I love the propulsive, Meg White feel. The tape warps and churns the sound and the microphones are blown out by the instruments - I’ve always loved the way tape handles natural distortion.

With cheap CDRs and Garageband and MP3 downloads making music recording and distribution so much easier these days (all good things), I haven’t had the experience of listening to a garage band’s rehearsal tapes or demos any time recently - something I used to greatly enjoy. I kind of get that here.

lyrics

You ask me “baby-baby what you gonna give to your girl?”
I tell you “baby-baby, I’ma gonna give you the world”

You tell me “baby-baby, take your time,
Cuz when you finish it’s a mine mine mine”

You tell me “come on in, a-sit right down and relax
A-let me help you by-a taken that shirt off your back”

You tell me “baby-baby, take your time
Cuz when you finish it’s a mine mine mine”

You say “oh baby, I’m so sorry for taking your things.
I’ll take any any anything”

“Oh take my heart and take my time
Cuz when you take it your-a mine mine mine”
