This is not about the summer after my sex change operation, no. It’s an anniversary present to my partner in all things, Melissa. I started writing this song a year ago for her, working on it on and off for 12 months and finishing it this week.

Summer means a lot to me in regards to our relationship - it’s when we fell in love, it’s when we’ve gone exploring, it’s when we’ve fought and made up - it stands for me a pretty awesome reminder of everything this relationship, everything this woman means to me.

I’ve written love songs for Melissa before, but this time I wanted to do more than just ooze cute nothings into the lyrics, and I thought on writing of her as the season that brought us together, tested us and reunited us. The joy I feel in the heat and the bright and the free of this season is the joy I feel with her. The power in the nature of summer is the force I feel in this incredibly amazing individual.

Sorry for the schmaltz - I really did my best to eliminate it from the tune - I’m only human. I certainly think that there’s something in this song for those of you who aren’t Melissa (there are, statistically speaking, quite a few of you). But, if you disagree, tune back in next week for some more post-punk about trees and neighborhoods in Brooklyn. Cheers.
