about

There are 15 songs left in the Song Cycle. We’ve entered, as I’ve chosen to call it in this moment. the Witching Hour. …That is a terrible name. Honestly? That’s the best I could come up with? Jesus. Oo! The Bitching Hour! …Also horrible. I got nothing.

Point is, time’s winding down. I may continue with a new song cycle next year, or another project in this space, similar or not. Either way, when I started way back in January, the goals were to keep busy, produce new material and get better. I’ve certainly been busy (38!) and I’ve certainly produced (38??). I can’t say that I’ve gotten much better, but I’ve certainly gotten different. There was a semester in college when I wrote about 100 songs in 3 months - but they were all pretty much the same, some even borrowing parts from one another. The least I can say about the Song Cycle is that I’ve put one mediocre leg in front of the other and journeyed all over the place.

Anywhoozles. I was thinking about this being the final 15 of the year, the final 15 of the project, and that, if anything, I should take what I’ve learned and done this year, set the bar as high as possible, and push towards fulfilling those goals as much as possible. Culminate. Or something.

This week, I gave myself the task of building a multiple section song with repeating themes and varying styles. I started composing background vocals this year - roughly - and wanted to feature those, with the caveat that they not just be unison hooks. My guitar playing seriously needs to improve, so I added in the task of writing a quick, melodic lead. Lyrically, as always, I’m challenged before I challenge myself - I tried to write honestly from multiple view points (something I tried earlier this year with Son You Are the Sky) - me looking at them, them looking at me, me looking at myself, etc.

lyrics

Teenage Hipsters, where you headed?
Useless answers, careless gestures
Bored with all the simple and safe
And giving everything a new name
Teenage Hipsters, where you headed now?

And all the boys got the ethics of the effortless heart down
And all the girls bought a drink more than they can retain
And every hour is a night in a life in the death of the charmers and saints
And no one wants to dance, not even a little bit

Teenage Hipsters, where you headed?
Healthy weathered, heaven-scented
Buried under what can afford
Context for the hungry and bored
Teenage Hipsters, where you headed now?

I’m so bored with being bored

Teenage Hipsters, what you covering?
Harvard sisters, upward brothers
And everything is getting young
To the point where nothing’s ever done
Teenage Hipsters, where you headed now?
