about

Wide Eyes appeared as a four chord segment last January while I fuddled around avoiding writing something that needed to be written that night. I usually record every little lick I come up with, for future use - I didn’t in this case. Funny thing is, I almost never end up using those scratch tracks for anything, but this one stuck around by it’s own merit for long enough to end up as a song. That may become my new rule with writing - if it’s not good enough to remember the next day, forget it.

Sort of on a (for me) classic rock (perhaps just protopunk) kick with my writing. Working with the Hey! was always an experiment in post-punk futurism - trying to write angular and against the grain music. Now I’m finding a bit more joy in writing tunes that are all about melody and familiar feels. Things lost on some strange radio station years ago. I feel a bit guilty about how easy and poppy it all feels, but I suppose it’s where I am right now.

This is yet another collaboration with the lovely Melissa Lusk, who lends her harmonies to the track in the most fantastic way. It’s also my Lucky 13th track of the year, meaning that I’m exactly 1/4 of the way through my cycle. Enjoy.

lyrics

You got a presence evident of sense so leave it alone
Devoted celibate though vocalist when cover is blown
But oh you blew it yourself so don’t come taggin along

You look a child, Wide Eyes. Why you always smiling at me?
I sense a siren, simmered silent with a violent streak.
I fear the timing, but, oh, you gotta hear me, girl

You’re not my baby, don’t come around, I said

You know your worth – of course – you’re first to note it every time
The casual run on of a verse rehearsed for subtle designs
Oh, girl

You’re not my baby, don’t come around, I said

Wide Eyes, what cha aim to capture?
Imagination - over active
I seen your notebooks, read your letters
Of each detail misremembered
But, Wide Eyes fixing, undefeated
Wild eyes always been my weakness
Same mistake twice, Lord, here we go…

You’re not my baby, don’t come around, I said
